In order to be admitted to postgraduate studies in graduate schools or business schools worldwide, applicants must take the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations). For admission to master’s or doctorate courses at the US and several Canadian universities, Indian candidates typically take this test.
The GRE General Test is a standardised exam used to determine your level of preparation for graduate school coursework. Some graduate courses demand that you take both the GRE General Test and the GRE Subject Test, which gauges your technical expertise in a particular field.
The Educational Testing Service, or ETS, administers the GRE tests. With its headquarters in the US, it is the world’s most prominent non-profit organisation for educational testing and evaluation.
One of the most popular tests accepted by international institutions for entrance to their postgraduate studies is the GRE. The GRE General Test is required as a component of the admissions process for students interested in MS, MBA, professional degree, or thesis coursework.
More and more business schools accept GRE scores instead of GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) results. As a replacement for the conventional LSAT (Law School Admission Test), an increasing number of US law schools now accept the GRE.
The GRE has no age restriction imposed by ETS. No of your age, you may take the test. Everyone is welcome to take the exam. Although you do not need a UG degree to take the test, you must finish your UG coursework to be admitted to graduate programmes.
Except for China, which costs $231, the GRE price for 2023 is $228 in India, or 18,857, and $220 everywhere globally. There are additional fees, such as those for switching the test location and postponing the exam. Charges for cancellations are additional.
You can take the “GRE at Home” and “GRE at a Test Centre” exams all year. Before signing up for the test, make sure you are well prepared. The best time to take the test is 60 to 90 days before the first deadline for applying to a university since this will allow you enough time to retake it if required.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF GRE TESTS:
- GRE General Test
- GRE Subject Test
GRE GENERAL TEST: WHAT IS IT?
It is a standardised exam that determines if you are prepared to register in graduate-level coursework. Your analytical writing, numerical ability, and verbal reasoning abilities will all be evaluated on the test. In the US, you can take the test to get admitted to MS programmes, a few MBA programmes, and graduate-level professional courses.
GRE SUBJECT TEST: WHAT IS IT?
Your knowledge of a particular field is evaluated. Only Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology are tested. You must take this paper-based test for admission to technical studies and speciality courses. The GRE Subject Test is offered thrice in April, September, and October each year. You may only participate in one subject at a time.
THERE ARE TWO FORMATS FOR THE GRE GENERAL TEST IN INDIA:
GRE Computer-Based Test: In this option, you must take the computer-delivered GRE General Test at a testing facility that has received approval from ETS.
You can take the computer-delivered GRE General Test in this manner from the comfort of your home. You can take the GRE at Home Test if your system satisfies the ETS standards. The debut of this format was done with students’ safety during the epidemic in mind.
GENERAL CURRICULUM FOR THE GRE
Similar question types to those you’ll see in graduate and professional institutions are included in the GRE General Test. The three main components of the programme are verbal reasoning, numeric reasoning, and analytical writing.
First, let’s discuss who is eligible to take the GRE. In other words, you are ready to sign up for the GRE if you want to pursue a master’s degree overseas. The university to which you are applying will also affect your GRE eligibility.
There is no particular GRE criteria; all that is needed to apply for the test is a current, unexpired government-verified ID document, ideally a passport.
THE RELIABILITY OF YOUR GRE RESULTS
After the test date, your GRE result is valid for five years. For instance, graduate schools accept scores granted five years ago since ETS deems the score valid for five years.
GRE SLOT SCHEDULING
Booking a GRE slot is one of the most important things you can do to prepare for the test. It has been noted that pupils frequently have to give up their preferred slot due to a lack of availability.
The recommendation is that you secure your GRE appointment as soon as you are prepared to take the test, even if you have a 2-month window to do so. Additionally, picking your GRE slot in advance will enable you to find a site that meets your preferences and is close to your location!
HOW CAN I SEND MY GRE RESULTS TO COLLEGES?
You must transmit your GRE results to institutions after obtaining your scorecard. How can you now transmit your test results to the institutions of your dreams? Let us explain.
If you took the computer-based test, you would receive your unofficial GRE verbal and quantitative results immediately. After 10 to 15 days, your entire GRE result, which includes your analytical writing score, will be visible in your ETS Account.
However, if you took the GRE on paper, your official score report will be available on your ETS account five weeks following the test date. You may immediately transmit your results, free of charge, through your ETS account to five of your desired colleges after obtaining them. You must spend for each extra GRE score report if you want to transmit your scores to multiple colleges.
